Gracian is a Legal Practitioner and Associate at a private/ commercial law practice known as Ritz Attorneys at Law. During his short private practice, he has gained extensive experience in commercial and corporate law, syndicated financing advisory, construction law. Insurance, family law, antitrust/competition law, ESG, renewable energy, human rights law, real-estate/ land law. Additionally, Gracian has considerable experience in providing conducting due diligence for cross-border deals both. He does this in liaison with international law firms. Gracian is a graduate of the University of Malawi. He finished his undergraduate degree with a distinction in dissertation work. Gracian has attended several post-graduate trainings and workshops in construction law, refugee law and in academic research on international economic law affecting Africa. He attended a construction law symposium at the Big-5 Construction Law Southern Africa, a training on refugee and statelessness law with the University of Cape Town (offered in conjunction with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), and is a Regional Representative of the Afronomicslaw Southern Africa—a high level academic engagement forum for various economic law issues affecting the Southern Africa and Africa as a whole.

Gracian takes pride in initiatives for giving back to society. He is an active participant in the tree planting activities spearheaded by Ritz Attorneys at Law every year. Gracian is also a member and volunteer legal advisor of the Registered Trustees of the Institute of Tamva Friends for the Deaf, a local NGO that advocates for the rights of the deaf students to increase their access to high quality education. The organisation provides training in sign language and formulates sign language clubs in various schools in Malawi. As an advisor to the organisation, Gracian advises on NGO management and compliance issues, project management, donor engagement and project proposal development.

  • Advised Nreca International on various employment engagements with local hires, assisted with incorporation of their local entity and reviewed and/or redrafted their employment contracts with their local hires in anticipation for implementation of their multimillion-dollar projects in Malawi.

  • Advised the United States based David Rockefeller Foundation’ Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) in conjunction with Withers LLP in the structuring of a USD 27.6 million green energy project grant for the benefit of Government of Malawi. Reviewed the grant agreement and advised on tax compliance, anticorruption and the public finance management of the deal.
  • Advised Seacom Limited with DLA Piper law firm on refinancing, restructuring, and setting up an evergreen a security trust structure. Advised on the viability of using the security trust instrument in syndicated financing arrangements in the context of the Malawian economy.
  • Part of team advising Shoprite Limited on acquisition and disposal of over USD 10 million worth of property in Malawi, exchange control regulations, tax considerations and other property rights-related matters.
  • Counsel responsible for foreign company registration, legal due diligence and change of name in Malawi for Trademark Africa Limited.
  • Part of team advising the Premier League on sports/media/cyber instructions related to Malawi.
  • Advised Premier League on a potential defamation claim against a Malawian who had made potentially defamatory statements against a renowned Premier League player.
  • Advising and litigating for Britam Insurance Company Ltd and Liberty Insurance Company Limited in contentious insurance related claims.
  • Defending Illovo Sugar Malawi PLC in cases where thousand of people have sued it in the lower shire district of Chikwawa.
